Reclaiming Dignity

Though each of us only spoke three or four phrases of the other's language, she was quick to catch on through gestures and miming and once she understood, you could see the understanding register clearly in her face. She has a wonderful sense of humor that transcends language and culture barriers and frequently had Vicky, Joyce (her nurse) and me laughing until we cried.

I am permanently changed by my encounter with Mariamu. She has taught me about forgiveness and letting go; she has taught me about perseverance and courage; and she will be an inspiration to me always. I don't understand why such a barbaric thing happened to her but I understand that she has transcended it. She has reclaimed her dignity and will brighten whatever part of the world she inhabits. ~ Kitty DeWitt

When I first knew that I would have the opportunity to provide lodging for Mariamu, my immediate concern was that she feel unconditional love and safety while here after all the terror she has undergone. From the moment I met her, I realized that she is the one who radiates love. Her smile brightens any room and her laughter sounds like little bells.

She was tinier than I expected but her strength of spirit was bigger than I ever could have imagined. I never saw a trace of rancor, bitterness or anger in her despite the brutality that was done to her. On the contrary, she exuded gratefulness, courtesy and kindness. One of the things that brought her the most pleasure was singing Christian anthems in Kiswahili and dancing her praises with abandon.
