Susan DuBois

Susan Leslie DuBois became involved with the albinism community with the birth of her children: Nick in 2000, and Katy, in 2002.  As a parent to children with albinism, she began a lifelong mission to help empower her children to lead fully productive lives, and to educate others as to the realities of albinism.  Her goal is to help people see the person before the albinism.

She has been an active member of the National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation (NOAH) since 2000, and with her husband Doug DuBois, she is a founding member of NOAH’s Washington, D.C. chapter.  Susan is also very active in fundraising and advocacy efforts for NOAH.  Susan was the principal author and editor of Raising a Child With Albinism: a Guide to the Early Years, published in 2008 by NOAH.  This book for new parents offers practical advice and information about albinism, it’s impact on vision, how to help maximize your child’s development, and important information on educating a visually-impaired child.

In addition to her commitment to Asante Mariamu, Susan is a successful grant writer, and has worked on behalf of several non-profit organizations.  She is an active PTA volunteer and language arts tutor at her children’s elementary school.

Originally from New York, Susan attended Albany Law School and is an attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. She lives with her family in Arlington, Virginia.
